(Elkton, KY) – Todd County Middle School and South Todd Elementary School have been awarded grants from the Tennessee Valley Authority, in partnership with Bicentennial Volunteers, Inc, a TVA retiree organization, to develop science, technology, engineering, and math education projects to help spark student interest in future careers in STEM-related fields.
Teachers across TVA’s seven-state region applied for funding of up to $5,000 for projects, and 233 applications were selected.
“When I was informed that my classroom was a recipient of the TVA/PRECC STEM grant, I was thrilled and was very excited for my students and Todd County Middle School. With this money, I plan to purchase a classroom set of Ozobots. The great thing about these Ozobots is the versatility they have. Students will be able to program them online via block coding or offline via color coding. Ozobots will provide students with a hands-on experience with computer programming, engineering, math, and science. The Ozobots will continue to develop our students creativity and critical thinking skills to support them in the real-world.,” said Mr. Andrew Diedrich, TCMS teacher for the Project Lead The Way/computer science class.
South Todd Elementary School is preparing students for amazing careers in STEM thanks to a grant from TVA and Bicentennial Volunteers Inc. The grant has allowed Mrs. Erica Skipworth to provide additional resources to help students excel in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math with the purchase of a 3D printer, drones, and more.
Schools who are awarded grants must receive their power from a local power served by TVA. Todd County Middle School is served by Pennyrile Rural Electric Co-Op.
“TVA is committed to supporting STEM education to help develop today’s students into tomorrow’s engineers, scientists, and IT professionals,” said Jeannette Mills, TVA executive vice president and chief external relations officer. “It’s inspiring to be able to contribute to the innovators of the next generation.”
Since 2018, TVA and BVI have awarded nearly $2 million in STEM grants to support local education.
