The Egg Drop project is a highly-versatile activity that can be used to introduce students to physics, materials science, and fluid dynamics. For elementary and middle school classes, the students have a wide range of materials to ‘buy’ with their allotted budgets. Additional components to the activity include timing the falls to calculate the average speed, measuring the deformations of the devices after the drop, and data analysis to compare which materials worked best overall.
Mrs. Erica Skipworth, Mr. Chuck Sadler, Mrs. Georgie Smith, and Mrs. Lisa Chester at STES have been working with their Fourth Grade Class on the STEAM Project, the Egg Drop. Lot's of student designs made it through all 3 rounds.
Round 1 - drop from shoulder height
Round 2 - drop from shoulder height while on a ladder
Round 3 - drop from roof of cafeteria
The Project has been a great experience for our students, from design of the project to implementation. A great thanks to the fourth grade team for their creativity and student engagement in implementing the STEAM Program.
